Agion CTO Appointed to Board of Non-Profit Focused on Clean Water

Solutions Benefiting Life has mission of bringing cleaner, safer water to the developing world

Wakefield, MA – December 22, 2009 –Agion CTO Jeff Trogolo, PhD,  has been appointed to the board of directors of Solutions Benefiting Life (SBL), a non-profit organization with a mission to bring cleaner, safer water to the developing world. Dr. Trogolo’s technical expertise with ionic silver will be a true asset to the organization,  as the drinking water systems it distributes worldwide use the silver treatment to remove contaminants from water.

SBL has a direct, positive impact on the lives of children and their families in developing countries through helping to solve the life-threatening problem of contaminated drinking water. SBL staff train local potters to develop micro-businesses that manufacture and distribute ceramic water filters called the Aquasif.  According to five years of research and development, the Aquasif deactivates 99.99% of bacteria in water in laboratory testing, costs less than $5, and is assembled at each location. SBL’s micro-entrepreneurs not only develop self-sustaining businesses, but also promote water sanitation and hygiene practices via classroom instruction  and community events.

“SBL has, in appointing and voting Dr. Trogolo onto our board of directors, acquired a much needed technical expert on ionic silver, the ‘magic ingredient’ at the heart of our Aquasif Household Water Treatment System that is now used by over 50,000 people in Nepal and India,” said SBL President, David Elliott. “Going forward, Jeff will certainly be able to make substantive contributions to our work as we expand the use (and possibly configuration) of the product and project into India and other developing countries.”

SBL has already set up 12 micro-businesses in villages across India and Nepal. SBL’s country managers help kick-start micro-businesses that become self-sustaining and provide new jobs to the local population. As novel social entrepreneurs, the potters help educate the communities they serve about hygiene, allowing local people take ownership of their own water needs.
